Fourth in a series
A new coach took over the Chatsworth program in 1990 and it didn't take him long to give a glimpse of what was to come not only that season, but in future years.
Tom Meusborn arrived at Chatsworth from Grant High and led the Chancellors to their second Los Angeles City Section title with a come-from-behind victory over West Valley League rival El Camino Real on May 31, 1990, at Dodger Stadium.
The Chancellors went into the game as underdogs and looked the part, going into the bottom of the sixth inning with a 2-0 deficit. But the Chancellors got to right-hander Pat Treend (12-1) for one run in the inning. After three consecutive walks with one out, third baseman Adam Pearlman singled to center field to drive in a run but shortstop Tommy Lee was thrown out at the plate while trying to score from second base.
Then Chatsworth left the Conquistadores on the field in the seventh inning.
Treend walked left fielder Rodney Bloom to open the inning. Second baseman Nestor Martinez bunted but Treend threw late to second base and both runners were safe. Catcher and clean-up hitter Mike Mancuso bunted but second baseman Herman Merchan dropped Treend's throw at first base. Bloom scored on the play to tie the score, 2-2, and Martinez advanced to third base. Mancuso moved to second base on defensive indifference when Treend held the ball as Mancuso strolled to second base.
After catching a liner by Mitch Root, Treend intentionally walked Reed McMackin, who started on the mound for the Chancellors and was selected the game's most valuable player, to load the bases. Lee laid down a suicide squeeze to drive in Martinez with the winning run.
Root (2-1), who started the game in center field, picked up the 3-2 victory with one inning of relief.
